Government Community Engagement
San Fernando Valley Council of Governments
Challenge:
Develop functionality and purpose for the San Fernando Valley Council of Governments (SFVCOG)—with 6 member jurisdictions collectively representing more than 2 million residents—despite frequent executive director turnover and disparate member priorities, geographies, and bandwidths.
Stratiscope Approach:
- Provided structure by redefining the mission of the organization and refocusing meetings on actionable, timely issues that were regional in scope.
- Crafted and implemented the SFVCOG’s first strategic plan.
- Managed a regional transportation assessment.
- Developed SFVCOG Mobility Academy.
- Led updating of SFVCOG’s governing documents.
Outcomes:
- Catalyzed the allocation of over $4 billion in regional transportation funding through the voter-approved Measure M.
- Trained more than 75 civic and community leaders to advocate regional transportation priorities.
- Annually updated regional transportation project priority list that begins with citizen input.
- Developed SFVCOG Mobility Academy.
- Annual renewal of Stratiscope’s contract since 2014. (This was done in open meeting by a public board vote.)
